The album is a new sound for Abel but is very reminiscing to late 80s to 90s pop vibe with its synth pop style. Though some melodies sound same and some beats aren't upto level as compared to others, its still a very cohesive album and imo Abel's best since Kissland. Starboy fans won't probably like this album tho.

The production, the melody, the beats are so flawless and incredible, which is why I give this album an 8. Abel did a good job making this album. But I never fully understand the message behind this album, or the lyrics, the contents... I guess that it talks about his sadness, loneliness and his depression from love ?

I really love this album, the vocalization is very relaxing to listen to, and the flow of the album really shows that it's very well put together. I especially love After Hours and Faith. I like very much!!

Whilst this is the first album I've listened to in full by The Weeknd, it definitely did not disappoint. It gives off a very 80s vibe, especially with all the electropop and synthpop included. My personal favourites were 'Hardest To Love', and 'In Your Eyes'. It's a great record!

This was my first time checking out an album by The Weekend. "After Hours" is an hour of smooth and really cool pop. I don't listen to much radio but I'd imagine the sound of this is going to be replicated by every second R&B pop star over the coming months in the way that Taylor Swift's 1989 did in 2014/2015. Production wise, "After Hours" is beyond slick and makes some decent melodies sound amazing, some incredible sounds coming together and alot of earworms on the album. It's impossible to tell if there is anything behind the lyrical content with the effects and autotune etc but in terms of sound, its good. The album won't necessarily be converting me into a fanatic but I am glad I checked it out. Quite enjoyable. Expand

Great opening track in "Alone Again" (one of my favorite Weeknd track's period) but unfortunately the rest of the project doesn't quite live up to the intro. Very cohesive and reflective album, but it needed more variation and darker tones & instrumentals to make a lasting impression. I love contemporary 80s synth pop, but it's the safer choice and there are too many of them on here. 7.5/10

On his most experimental record yet, The Weeknd doesn't completely get out of his comfort zone. There's still a taste of the early The Weeknd, still, this is a reinvention of some sort. Some of the songs might sound similar if not the same, but it's an enjoyable ride overall. "In Your Eyes" and the title song "After Hours" are definitely the standout tracks, as well as "Scared to Live".

The album has a charming effect because of the unice, unusual and beautiful sound. The mysterious style of the album goes through every song and this is the reason why it feels great while listening to that. But there is a feeling like something is missing and it's really difficult to explain what exactly. Maybe catchy tunes, maybe unforgettable lyrics. Fans of The Weeknd definitely will like it!

He has written some very catchy tunes in his time and he has a beautiful voice but the albums themes seem to be very repetitive, girls, money and a little bit of heart break, not much variety. Electronic sound is sometimes quite flat, not much punch, using the electronic effects to compensate for the lack of depth in the subject matter. Singles are as strong as his previous albums

He dabbles so much into '80s nostalgia that he almost rick-rolled us. The songs that don't sound like Tears For Fears B-sides sound like Trilogy B-sides. Why do so much artists see the start of the '20s as an incentive to go back to their roots? Or is it just that they feel obliged to release something?

The Weeknd has been able to sneak in the popular scene of music without losing his own style. The depressive, nostalgic, and futuristic tendency have won a big fanatic mass that has made of The Weeknd a more popular artist than what he might deserve. In "After Hours", the artist gives in more into the popular demand and produces an album with very cliche and melodramatic lyrics, the music is simply an expression of that recycled Pop that mixes with Trap and R&B to complete a formula that enclosures the masses in a vicious loop of empty and cheap consumerism. Even if Kevin Parker makes a very welcome production and Da Healagives the attractive side to the album, in general, this is an experience that will be substituted as quickly as it disappears from the radio.

This is unfortunately the only and most important criticism I can give the artist. The production is interesting but the formula is repeated far too often throughout the album. This style of R&B doesn't make it easy for us and contributes to lose ourselves in a grotesque fresco, sometimes flat and dull, sometimes dancing or quiet but very rarely surprising, even if the few electro-like flights of fancy are admirable (as in the track 'After Hours'). The modified voice of the artist becomes in the space of a few tracks unbearable, repetitive and haunting.

All the promotion of this album that the fans have been waiting for no less than 4 years is outrageous. It became more otrageous when you realize it worked in a surprising way. The Weeknd doesn't have any remorse to capitalize on its recordings and doesn't hesitate to release several different deluxe versions and to make a series of remixes and covers more or less remarkable. The instrumental versions add to the indecency of the approach. I am not fooled by the deception of the project. Soon (and currently, by the way) the official music videos created from colossal sums of money will invade the platforms and add to the so-called supremacy of the artist.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While the opening track is sublime in its sound and atmosphere, After Hours immediately takes a nosedive into a long string of songs that just seem to drag on forever. This is mainly due to the overproduction of The Weeknd´s voice and extreme lack of variation on the instrumental end, leaving much to be desired in terms of anything interesting or exciting. The biggest offender on this album has to be the lyrics though. Besides a few good lines (never need a **** im what a **** needs), this album almost put me to sleep, literally, because of how little investment I had in anything that was being said. It sounds as though The Weeknd asked a group of 13 year olds to write this album for him. Overall the lyrics have no substance or feeling behind them. Many people pride this album on being featureless, but in my opinion an interesting or well timed guest verse could have given a lot of the songs more re-listenability. One good thing about this album would have to be the singles released ahead of it; they are fire. But unfortunately, the rest of After Hours does nothing for me. Apenas duas músicas boa, o resto é enjoativo e chato. O álbum não te prende do início ao fim.

The main single is the only one that saves it, it is a completely simple album and to which you can omit several tracks, a concept of greatness, heartbreak and loneliness that many artists already have spent, it is nothing innovative and the rhythms are repeated so much to the point that you are looking to see if it will ever change. Sounds the same, I can't clearly hear the words in those songs. The production... Meh. Sorry.

After an amazing single in Blinding Lights I had to give this album a chance. It's no different than any other R&B album out there. Was extremely disappointed. The beats start to sound the same throughout the entire album. Was hoping for more 80's vibes.

Whilst i can respect the weeknd's affinity for reinvention ajd fascination with retro sounds i cannot say i enjoyed this record. It felt mediocre, bland and derivative. Nothing about after hours feels relevant, instead its a vapid depressive episode.

The tune of the album really is the same throughout, with some songs worth listening again but overall album is quite plain and flat, starboy was a much better representation of his personality and talent

no versatility, i feel like all his songs sound the exact same. i get that he relies on what he knows will automatically be a hit, he should try different styles and genres, people will get bored with the pumping of the same song over and over again

One of the most overrated albums ever. This man it's like Bruno Mars. They both think they are the coolest and they just don't.

Best album of 2020! A well done story from the first song to the last. The Weeknd created a new character with inspiration from different movies and is very fascinating. The album musically is amazing which amazing songs like blinding light, in your eyes, save your tears and heartless just to mention a little.

And the worst album of 2020 goes to- The Weeknd. Who got overhyped from making a very mediocre album. Future Nostalgia and Folklore were 10000000% better, Bye

One of the most overrated artists today who sees himself as Michael Jackson, lol. The Weeknd ran to Max Martin, wanting to make hits desperately, thinking he might sweep Grammys. Guess what happened? He didn't even get a nomination, then cried like a baby everywhere. Accept it: your album sucks and no one knows your non-single album tracks. King of payola failed hard this time. Awful.

Spidery tendrils of sex-and-drugs-related dread curl around dramatic synth-pop and twinkling R&B, Yet there's also a batch of tracks that draw from bombastic, slightly tacky '80s pop - a warm, funny and wholly welcome diversion from the stylish but sterile bleakness that remains Tesfaye's calling card.
