(Also known as "Race Dirver: GRID") GRID takes players to dramatic and beautifully realized race locations over three continents to compete in a variety of racing events. Packed with the most powerful race cars - new and classic, circuit and drift - players compete to conquer the most prestigious official race tracks and championships then beyond to compete in challenging city-based competitions, and then on through to road events and urban street races. The drama, the rivalries, the aggression and the crashes; this is not a game about collecting cars or spending all of your time in the front-end tuning suspension settings or designing liveries. Codemasters wants to make racing exciting again. Gamers compete on Europe's greatest official race tracks in prestige Marques including Aston Martin, Koenigsegg and Pagani. Iconic cities across the U.S, including San Francisco, Washington DC and Detroit - each with their own atmosphere and events - play host to diverse street races, where high-performance V8 muscle cars set the pace in aggressive, closely fought pack competitions. And in the Far East, Japanese racing culture sets the tone where night races, including Drift racing, takes drivers through neon illuminated cities and to outlying mountain roads. There's also the opportunity to compete in races that operate on the fringes of legality in the back streets and industrial areas of Yokohama. [Codemasters]

Many will balk at the game because it doesn’t offer a million different models of car. Those who do are missing the point. Grid is all about the fun and excitement of the race. It’s racing with a capital ‘R’ minus the frustration. You won’t find a more fun racing game this year.

If Colin McRae: DIRT was a sign of Codemasters regaining a foothold in the racing market, the latest Race Driver is evidence of the publisher taking full control. GRID makes the high points of its rivals feel like false dawns, and if what’s on offer here is a sign of things to come, we’re all in for a remarkable ride.

Series vets with fond memories of the Pro Race Driver/TOCA games on previous systems should pick this up immediately, and if you're unsure about it, there's a demo available for download that’ll give you a good idea as to how easily most of the cars can be controlled, but won't give you a very accurate view of just how many kinds of racing styles are represented in the full game.

GRID is, in essence, the Nicole Kidman of racing games. Hollywood production values couple with classic beauty under neo lighting, skinned-over by intelligent complexity--all of which rumbles unseen beneath the bodywork, sometimes understated, sometimes overt, and at all times volatile.

Race Driver: GRiD can be described as the pinnacle of Codemasters' efforts to produce a racing game that injects a breath of fresh air into the genre, coupling delicious visuals and sublime handling with a feeling that every successfully won race is truly earned, and every sneaky win at the expense of the impressively unpredictable AI is no hollow victory.

Otherwise, GRID is a great success: the single-player is varied without being confusing; the online multiplayer supports 12 players and damage modelling, reducing the number of first-corner pile-ups; tracks and cars are well chosen and recreated; and Flashback allows you to race with the same determination on lap three as you did on lap one, mitigating risk in a manner of which other racing game developers will soon be envious.

Although the drift racing is too dependant on the hand brake and I’d like more emotional investment in the cars in my garage (some tweaking would be nice, as would more of a sense of pride in each car I own), Grid is a shining example of how to make a fresh racing game that captures that age-old, fundamental desire to go screaming down the asphalt like a rubber-shredding, hell-bent maniac.

Apocalypse B. gave it a9:
I think this is the best racing game in this current gen, but not the most complete one. PGR4 has more online features, while Forza 2 has a more in-depth single player. BUT, both games lack the skill and excitement this game has to offer. Driving-wise, this isn't a simulator, but it offers the best and most specular races you will see for a long while. And I personally love the fact that all cars are equal i.e. not much customization, as it makes racing more interesting and ultimately much harder to win or judge what will happen. Crashes are burnout like, but even more pleasurable to witness, whether its first hand or its seeing others roll off the track. And it is the fear of crashing that keeps you on your seat of your chair, as one major impact will end your race unlike other racers. But then you can rewind the game via four pauses or less in each race, to retake that corner or avoid that plie-up. Gimmicky? Not really, as you will at least use it once and won't remove the sense of joy to win one bit. Online is a bit basic, so is the single player. But you know what, its HUGE AMOUNTS OF FUN! And that is all you want, not to fall asleep as in Forza or get bemused what to do in PGR. Simply every petrol head must buy for this year!

Noir L. gave it a7:
Cars slide around like butter on a hot pan. AI is virtually unmovable. Spinouts are way too common and unrealistic. It's like cars have no traction in this game. One tap from an opposing car and you're spinning out of control. Cars aren't customizable. What?!!?!? Forget engine changes, or paint colors. The implication is that you're too stupid to handle changing things on your car. Only 45 cars. Lame. Multiplayer ghosts cars that aren't on the same lap as you, so you can drive straight through them. Likewise, they can't just stop and cause pile-ups. This is both a pro and a con. No boosts or Nos. Glitchy playback. Bad bug. Pros: Beautiful graphics. Good camera doesn't block your view or hesitate at corners. Excellent multiplayer menu. Multiplayer can be fun, when you're not piling up at every corner and losing the race.

Akrita A. gave it a10:
I never wanted to finish a racing game that bad.. Forget air pressures and balancing tires, just drive. Killer graphics, killer replays, lots of fun. 10 is less I could give... get it

Daz gave it a10:
Best racer to come out in ages. Really exciting and the flashback idea is wicked. All of the types of cars are brill but the destruction derby cars and races are laugh-out-loud funny and very tense. A highly recommended game.

Ron H. gave it a0:
I just can't put into words the extreme disappointment I feel after waiting for this game to be released. It just doesn't live up to all the hype that I was reading. This thing is going to be traded in as soon as I can get back to the store.

Mobius gave it a10:
Having played the full game, all I can say is WOW!! Grid is all about racing and it's as simple as that, I know that there are the FORZA 2 addicts and this is going to be compared a lot, but Grid and Forza are two totally separate games and neither can be compared to each other. No denying that Forza is a dam fine game but things have to move on, Grid is a little different, grid makes sure that every player will always be equal to every other player, this means that if you come first, its down to your skill at driving and not having a car that has been set up via a suspension calculator. Grid is also a lot more forgiving than Forza for the simple reason that the game wants you to spend more time on the track than in the gravel. As far as I can tell there are 4 modes of play. Touring car Muscle car Drift racing Demolition Derby. Code masters have tried to cater for everyone, touring car is similar to previous versions of Toca Muscle is more grip racing Drift is in my opinion is not needed at all And demolition derby is an absolute riot But if you are a Forza addict you are totally welcome to turn off all driving assists and you will find Grid almost identical in handling to Forza. Meaning you have to brake progressively and control acceleration to make sure you don't spin out, for the pro driver, turning off the assists will give you the advantage but for the players who just want to race and have fun in doing some fun racing, keep those driving assists on. Either way what you have is the next evolution in driving games. It's going to be almost impossible to get the Forza fan base to play GRID because the people I have come across all say it's to Arcady, I personally think that they are afraid to take on a new challenge. As quoted on the Box" THE DRIVING GAME OF THE SUMMER" TOP GEAR MAGAZINE. And these guys should know!

Domz gave it a10:
I just bought it yesterday and I have to say that this is one of the best racing games I ever played. Graphics are absolutely stunning, replays are out of this world. Career mode is really good and racing itself is very very enjoyable. AI is surprisingly solid and way better than AI from any other game. The only thing what I would like to see is more cars, but I bet Codies will prepare good DLC content anytime soon. So if you are a fan of good driving games you have to get GRID. You owe it to your petrol self.
