The renowned Silent Hill survival horror series continues on the PS2 with a brand new adventure that reveals many of the series' most hallowed secrets. Assuming the role of a lone truck driver who becomes trapped in Silent Hill, players must escape the city’s horrific inhabitants and confront the strange hallucinations that have haunted him since childhood. Featuring enhanced graphics, sound and control, Silent Hill Origins sets a new standard for this survival horror classic. Silent Hill Origins features a dark story that explores the events prior to the original Silent Hill and reflects the troubled past of the main character, Travis Grady. An enhanced camera system elevates the sense of fear and horror that surrounds your every step. Updated controls allow for more fluid combat and detailed exploration of the environment. Encounter horrific new creatures, challenging new puzzles and uncover the mysteries behind the town as you try to escape the clutches of Silent Hill. Silent Hill Origins features an original soundtrack by famed series composer Akira Yamaoka. [Konami]

Even if some of the aspects have gone downhill when compared to the PSP version, the game still remains the same from a gameplay perspective and overall story point of view.

Origins is a solid entry in a popular horror franchise, but some mechanics (such as the combat and camera) show that the series is in need of a reboot. However, it's hard to beat the psychological sense of the fear that Silent Hill creates.

Pelit (Finland)
While bringing nothing new to the series and having some serious problems with the camera and clumsy battle controls, the game still comes out as highly atmospheric and enjoyable survival horror-experience. [June 2008]

Silent Hill Origins might be the weakest installment in the series, but it’s a testament to the quality of the franchise when the weakest entry is still this good.

Still compelling, but it was more suited to PSP. [June 2008, p.84]

An unnerving experience certainly, but the same old problems persist. [June 2008, p.73]

Worth Playing
Fans of survival horror and the Silent Hill series will enjoy Silent Hill: Origins, while others will be turned off by its morbid nature. If you don't have a PSP and didn't get the chance to check out the title a year ago, now's your chance.

Game Chronicles
There are some interesting differences in the controls, and considering that Origins is meant to be a prequel to the rest of the games, it's forgivable that the game doesn't try to revolutionize the entire series.

For 30 bucks, the capable haunts here are worth this house of horrors. [May 2008, p.60]

There are moments that'll have you on the edge of your seat, but unwieldy combat and easy enemies takes away the fear. [May 2008, p.70]

Silent Hill and survival horror fans will like it for the most part. But if you played the original on PSP, there's not really any pressing reason to go through it again.

The problem with most of the game is that it's all been done already, and was done better by the last three games in the franchise to hit the system.

While it’s unattractive and a bit awkward on the PS2, if you don’t own a PSP and you’re a survival horror fan, Silent Hill Origins still comes recommended.

Its willfully old-school design and clunky combat belong in a bygone era, and for the optimistic price-tag Konami has slapped on the game we've every right to expect more. Only the most hardcore of fans will have time for this; the rest of us should wait for Homecoming.

The great atmosphere is harmed by flawed mechanics – camera, fighting, response delay – that hopefully will be addressed in the next chapter.

It's a cliché, but this is a game for the fans. Not because we're scared and we can't take the horror. It's because fans are the only ones that can overlook the faults. The controls and the camera are terrible to work with. The typical Silent Hill-vibe makes up for it.

All in all if you miss the quaint old town and feel like returning for old time's sake then Origins mostly satisfies.
