The first game in the Assassin's Creed franchise is set in 1191 AD, when the Third Crusade was tearing the Holy Land apart. Shrouded in secrecy and feared for their ruthlessness, the Assassins intend to stop the hostilities by suppressing both sides of the conflict. Players, assuming the role of the main character Altair, have the power to throw their immediate environment into chaos and to shape events during this pivotal moment in history. [Ubisoft]

The game looks better than ever on the PC and plays like a dream too. However if you already have the game you wont find anything totally new other than the odd side-mission.

When pumped up to max settings, this new director’s cut makes the game look better than ever. Individual textures pop off the screen, making cloth and stone appear remarkably lifelike.

Great PC conversion of a somewhat flawed game. It just feels that the actual gameplay elements got sidelined while developing all the technology used to realize the the impressive cities, the crowds and the great character animation.

Assassin's Creed is a feast for the eyes. The views are breathtaking, and Altair moves smoothly through the Orient. For all its great setting and dialogues, the game is not as good as it could be and should be -- gameplay is repetetive and rather predictable. But it's good enough to have a few hours of fun.

Assassin's Creed is graphically stunning, acoustically impressive, innovative and brilliantly staged. But one thing's definitely lacking: replay value! And a certain degree of monotony can’t be denied either. Like a colleague of mine once said: "It could have been way better then that!" Personally, I simply keep hoping for a massively improved AC2 and lots of merchandise! May Ubisoft Montreal concentrate on many, many successors and spin-offs. [May 2008]

By no means perfect, but it still manages to captivate with it's marvellous interpretation of the 12th century Holy Land. It's really a pity that there's so little to do in such a beautiful world. [May 2008]

Assassin’s Creed for the PC is a pretty compelling action game that benefits from huge environments and an interesting story. While the main campaign can get a bit repetitive, the new Director’s Cut features add some nice variety.

Even so, Assassin's Creed remains one of the best games of the year. It's not THE game most probably expected it to be, but it's a solid base on which Ubisoft Montreal can build the rest of the series, now that they have the solid backing of the impressive worldwide sales.

There's not much to make Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut stand out from the console release half a year ago. The graphics are still pretty; the gameplay is still simplistic but satisfying, and the information gathering missions are still quirky at first and sluggish by the end of the game. The implication that this version is superior by the movie-like suffix is mainly unfounded.

The AI can be forgiven because it has its occasional brilliant moments; the mission design is in worse straits, being entirely predictable, but if nothing else it gives an excuse to tour the Holy Lands, ambush a few more enemies, and clamber up a few more minarets.

Stealth and free-running are jettisoned: all that is left is a constant barrage of swordfights. It's a disaster, a betrayal of everything the player has learnt so far. It abandons even the slim veneer of choice that the very best games offer us, turning into Double Dragon in a monk's robe.

Assassin's Creed should certainly be played by anyone who's got a PC capable of getting the most out of the game's superb visuals, but don't expect to be playing something that will go down in history as one of the greatest games of all time. It's ambitious and succeeds more than it fails.

The intriguing story, breathtaking views and flawless acrobatic maneuvers are terrific, in fact, almost everything is nigh perfect, except tracking and eliminating the targets. That's right, in a game about an assassin the most boring part is his job. Well, just a part of it - the medieval parkour never gets old. [May 2008]

There's no reason for console players to get this version, but if you're console-less, and have the horsepower, it's still a worthy experience, if only to play something that's actually unique compared to other games out there.

The pc version of Assassin's creed is a bit better then the console version. With its extra missions the game has become less 'repeatable'. The gameplay isn't bad but also can't really blow us away. Assassin's creed is more then just a simple game, it's a game you need to experience. Assassin's Creed is also a glimpse of what we might expect from games in the future.

What you're left with is a repetitive side-quest requirement for completing each primary mission, though the issue is alleviated somewhat with the PC version's additional content.

Alas, beautiful and fascinating though it may be, it is not substantial. There's a severe lack of depth for a game so enamored with its aspirations of an "open world." The gates may be open, but the possibilities couldn't be more limited.

The spectacuar way in which the game is presented is enough to make the most players want to overlook the deep-running problems it harbors and plaudits must be paid to a setting this original and so excellently realized. [June 2008, p.64]

Assassin's Creed was scheduled to be a trilogy from the outset, so hopefully Ubisoft will take a fresh look at some of the problems here and correct them in the future. Right now, though, this is more of an almost-there concept than a fully realized game.

Marky P gave it a7:
An absolutely fascinating premise, a 'game within a game' dynamic that hasn't been exploited before. It's a stunningly realised Medieval world, and the first few missions are breathtaking. Hearing the characters speak, negotiating crowds, and running up walls and climbing is just pure joy. The draw distance is good and I was worried that my PC wouldn't cope (ports of console games tend to be badly optimised). But my year-old MacBook Pro could play everything on max settings and it simply looks superb. But I'm only going to play halfway through this game because of what everyone else has been saying: the repetition, which is starting to pall. A real shame, because such a detailed and believable world deserves a more developed gameplay dynamic. And the main character Altair is simply arrogant and American (the American accent didn't exist in 1191AD, but of course it is Desmond being projected into that world as an avatar; but still, why make the protagonist cheesily American like every other action hero?). Definitely worth seeing and playing, but not worth 40.

Jungle N. gave it a10:
Rarely do I rate graphics above gameplay but they are simply mindblowing in this game. Stunningly rendered detail that makes up for any lack of gaming depth and to those who said the control was a bit too simplistic - it might be but there's no way they could have rendered such classy moves without making it impossible to learn. Maybe a bit 'samey' but I can't get enough.

joesph b. gave it a10:
I had a fun time playing it the the graphics are the best . I like ho u can steal everyons pen thing and go on the computer. My overall sayin is vantastic

Brian S gave it a9:
This game was very fun. Great story and graphics and the combat can be challenging as well. I would like everyone that complains about the controls to read the reccomended specs for this game.. Yes a xbox360 gamepad makes all the difference in the world when playing this game and I highly reccomend everyone picking up a gamepad if they buy this game.

Oren I. gave it a7:
The game is beautiful and entertaining for the first few hours of gameplay. But as time goes on and the combat system is mastered, the game is all too repetitive and nothing is really added to spice up the game. After the fifth hour of gameplay I started to avoid combat altogether until boss battles. It is not worth all the trouble to get to a boss battle though. A great combat system that is 15X better than the usual hit, run/block, hit, but it isn't good enough to support an otherwise boring game. It is cool to climb up buildings, but doing so takes too long. Overall, you should try this game, but I think the 7 rating I gave was fair...

Bryon gave it a9:
A word about the controls for PC... If you have a 5-button mouse, it makes controlling this game a LOT easier and more fun. I have played it on 360 and was wondering how it would be to play it on PC. Thankfully, you can use a 5-button mouse with this game, and it is so much better than with a 360 controller! This game has amazing graphics. It looks awesome on my monitor. Much better than on my standard def TV. I can't wait for Assassin's Creed 2!

M.E. H gave it a7:
The game Has very impressive graficks and and everything is nicely done and in the beggining the game is very addictive but later on you get bored bechuse the game is to repetetiv you keep doing the same thing over and over again and it has no replay value.
