Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. [Issue#329]
Final Fantasy XVI melds the best of the series’ themes with a modern, malleable take on combat—creating a heartrending, generation-defining tale of revenge, fate, and freedom.
Me ha gustado el juego tiene buenos personajes y argumento pero quizas las misiones segundarias fueran un poco aburridas por lo demas buena musica accion entretenido.
Final Fantasy’s first crack at pure action-RPG combat plays exceptionally well, and has the worldbuilding and cinematic flair to ensure that you’ll want to push through even the occasionally bloated encounter.
Nothing short of a technical marvel, Clive Rosfield and Torgal are among some of the best character action duos and their 70-hour epic adventure across Valisthea will forever be remembered in Final Fantasy XVI
Final Fantasy XVI is a fantastic adventure, but slightly irregular. There are some aspects that prevent it from being on the podium with the best entries in the franchise, but, when it is over, it leaves a great aftertaste that makes you forget about those imperfections.
Final Fantasy 16 is a massive game that, in many ways, feels like a response to years of rocky terrain. This is one of the most beloved series in gaming, but one that has had big ups and downs, especially in recent memory.
Final Fantasy XVI delivers on the “action” side of its action-RPG formula. A fierce and fast-paced combat system makes for the series’ most exciting stab at real-time swordplay yet, while its blockbuster Eikon fights rank among some of gaming’s most awe-inspiring battles. But there’s a general flatness surrounding those exhilarating highs, as shallow RPG hooks and dated design leave a promising evolution for the series stuck in the past.
The game mostly looks amazing. The cutscenes and Eikon battles are stunning, but when you're just in town talking to random NPCs, it feels like an entirely different game. The voice acting is also great and the story is generally good, so props to them for that. Clive is also a very interesting protagonist, while supporting characters like Jill and Cid are also great...
However, combat wise... it's flashy, its quick, but lacks a lot of depth. Most encounters you just run in, spam your aoe abilities, and finish off the stragglers. Once in a while you get a "heavy" enemy which requires you to use some other Eikon abilities to stagger it, then unload some others to dish out big damage. Most will die with one cycle of doing so.... MAYBE two if didn't capitalize on the stagger. Bosses will take you through probably 2 or 3 cycles of this... then a QTE cutscene (which are almost impossible to fail cause its ALWAYS square for attack and ALWAYS circle for dodge), then the next stage of the fight starts. Some fights have multiple stages with very little variation between them (maybe instead of 2 beams to dodge, there are 3! Or instead of jumping 3 times, they jump 4 times!).
By the end, some fights were taking 30+ minutes and they just were not fun to do the same thing over and over and over and over and over again. Even some of the Eikon fights were just ridiculous. Just how many fire balls do I have to shoot to take down this thing? But also, they're worse than regular boss fights because now your move pool is limited! Now you don't have the various Eikon abilities to spam, so instead of rotating 6 abilities, you're rotating 2. The fights aren't even challenging. The combat is SO easy, and they give you equipment options to make it even easier if needed (which is totally fair and I don't mind), but there's not really an option to make things more difficult other than... don't use those equipments. I could just NOT use Eikon abilities...? Or not use potions? But even then, it wouldn't be harder, just make fights even more long and tedious than they already are.
Going back to the "party" members... I feel like some of the party banter that makes games like GoW: Ragnarok great are missing. Sometimes you just ride in silence through an area, while in GoW, the supporting characters would give interesting lore tid bits. Hell, sometimes they'd just try and make a joke to break the silence. Now, I just have to read them with their extensive glossary. Or I have to do a random fetch quest to get the lore. The world is boring and even when I did try to go off the beaten to explore, I wasn't rewarded with any useful loot or unique gear. The RPG mechanics are bare bones, which is odd for an RPG. You give me all these elemental abilities, but no elemental advantages or disadvantages? I can kill a lava monster with.. fire? And no secret boss or Eikon to unlock? No fun side content/mini games? The antagonists are interesting in design and concept, but I feel like they could have done more with them.
All in all, there are some real highs, but also real lows. Its worth playing, but with DLC recently being announced, maybe wait until they release a complete edition that will inevitably include the two paid DLCs. But, in the end, I can't help compare this game to something like Ragnarok rather than I do FF7 Remake/Rebirth, which in my mind, was just better in every possible way.
FF16 is one of the most cinematic games I've ever played. I feel like the people who hate the game, judge it not on its strengths & flaws but on the latter alone. It's a very different Final Fantasy game that takes a lot of inspiration from Game of Thrones, Devil May Cry & God of War. Sure FF16 has quite a few flaws and it's far from a perfect game but still worth playing, if you haven't already. It terms of replay value, it has none because of the absurdly long cutscenes and very linear gameplay that's solely focused on combat and nothin else. Exploration feels useless and there's isn't much to explore anyway cuz of the small maps & the side quests are the most generic and repetitive I've ever experienced (way worse than say ubisoft side quests lol). The story is ok and nothing to write home about. The Eikon battles were awesome tho! All in all it's a one and done game.
